This expanded fourth edition defines and cross-references 9,040 homophones and 2,133 homographs (up from 7,870 and 1,554 in the 3rd ed.). As the most comprehensive compilation of American homophones (words that sound alike) and homographs (look-alikes), this latest edition serves well where even the most modern spell-checkers and word processors fail--although rain, reign, and rein may be spelled correctly, the context in which these words may appropriately be used is not obvious to a computer.

Readers may be familiar with homonyms, which are words with different meanings that are pronounced and spelled the same way (such as plane, which as a verb can mean to make smooth or to soar in the air and as a noun can mean a level, a type of tree, or a means of transportation). The less familiar homophones are words with different meanings and spellings that sound alike (raise, rays, and raze) or nearly alike (accept and except). And homographs look alike but are pronounced differently (minute, a unit of time, vs. minute, very small). Hobbs developed this valuable resource, first published in 1986, after helping a friend's child generate hundreds of homophones for a contest. The bulk of it is devoted to 7,781 homophones arranged in alphabetical order, followed by 1,552 homographs, also in alphabetical order and aided by See references. Typical entries feature a one- or two-sentence definition, and entries for homographs include pronunciation information. The annotated bibliography is more than seven excellent pages in length, but the nine-page appendix is a confusing array of homophones, homographs, and words that function as both. Useful for larger collections, wordsmiths, spelling enthusiasts, and punsters.AElizabeth Connor, Medical Univ. of South California, Charleston

A survey of the surprisingly numerous titles in this narrow subcategory reveals that the conventional way of packaging a collection of homophones and homographs is to conceive a title that exemplifies the content rather than defines it, strongly suggesting that the intended audience is juvenile. To put it plainly for anyone who hasn't seen an earlier edition, Homophones & Homographs is not to be confused with lighter-weight entries in this category. It is a serious work of exemplary scholarship that stands alone in the field. It represents 24 years of research resulting in a collection ("so far") of 9,040 homophones and 2,133 homographs. Author Hobbs says his "current best estimate of when this project in American English may approach closure is about 11,000 homophones and 3,000 homographs."
Besides consulting the 219 sources listed in his bibliography, Hobbs says he "solved countless New York Times and Wall Street Journalcrossword puzzles^B . . . to glean what comprises this volume." How many researchers can make this claim? Alphabetized, cross-referenced homophones appear first in the text, followed by an alphabetical listing of homographs. Brief but adequate definitions are provided for every entry. Appendixes list "unusual groupings, such as "five or more one-syllable words" (picks, pics, Picts, pix, pyx). There is as well a prefatory overview providing context and perspective. It includes definitions and a brief discussion of whether homophones tend to self-destruct because they become encumbered with ambiguity--the "conflict of homophones" controversy.
