What I enjoyed most about all of these audio lessons is that the lessons taught me practical, conversational Spanish. And the program’s teaching style really helped to improve my Spanish pronunciation. But one thing that really stands out about this program is that the interactive method really helped me to think in Spanish.One problem that I have always had is that when I hear Spanish spoken, I try to translate it in my head. Which doesn’t work because by the time I finish translating a phrase in my head, the speaker is already finishing another phrase or two. But I noticed that the interactive method used in this program forces me to actually “think†in Spanish as opposed to mentally translate from Spanish into English.Another thing that I really like about this program is that they include several bonus gifts. Entonces hoy… All right, enough of that. Now, people always ask me: “Darian, how did you learn Spanish? What methods did you use to help your Spanish?â€There’s this idea that because I’ve lived in Latin America, that I learned Spanish. Let me give you my background really quickly. I taught in Honduras for two years, I taught in Dominican republic for a year, and I also did a six-week study abroad in Costa Rica about six years ago.Now, when I moved to Costa Rica I spoke minimum Spanish. Like, I knew “hola,†“¿cómo está?†y “¿dónde está el baño?†Now, people will assume that just by virtue of living in Latin America that you will learn how to speak Spanish. Now, that is not true at all. That’s like saying that just because you have a gym membership that you’ll get in shape. So, this is the program that I used.I do want to go over five reasons why you too should use this program. Reason number one: it helps you develop the ear for Spanish. This is what you call the Listen and Reply method. A lot of people tell me this: “well, I understand it, I just can’t speak it.†Or, “I can read it and write it but I can’t speak it.†Guess what: you can’t speak it. But the whole point of communicating is to communicate.People don’t walk around in English and say “hey, wait one second, let me write this down.†It would just be weird. So Spanish sounds like it’s spoken in cursive. Like, the words just run together.For the longest, I never heard the word “hermano,†I always heard “mano.†And I’m like: “why do they keep on saying ‘hand’? I’m so confused.†And then one day, I heard the “hermano.†And that’s when I was like: “oh, that’s the whole word.†It’s very difficult because the words do run together and, if you don’t have the ear for it. So, that’s one thing that this method does for you. It helps you develop the ear for it by doing the Listen and Reply or the Call and Respond method.All right, reason number two the creators of the program give you usable Spanish. They give you scenarios for every day, common things like ordering coffee at a restaurant, how to check in at a hotel, how to call a cab. I used another program (once again, I won’t say the name of it) and they taught me stuff like “the boy runs down the street†- “el niño corre.†Listen, I have not said “the boy runs down the street†since I started speaking Spanish. Another Spanish program taught me to say something like “the horse is underneath the airplane.†No one says that.Reason number three: Ut’s only 30 minutes a day. Now again, I did a different program where I was dedicating maybe two to three hours per day. And I don’t even have a lot of time on my hands, but I really was desperate to learn Spanish. And so, I was studying, studying, studying, and I didn’t learn anything. So, this is only 30 minutes. Roughly 25 to 30 minutes, depending on you. This is something you can do during your morning commute, on your way back home, if you’re doing cardio at the gym… I’ve done it while I’m on the Stairmaster, people looking at me like I’m crazy. But I don’t care, I’m learning Spanish.Reason number four: The creators of the program use authentic Latin American voice actors. Like people from Colombia, people from Venezuela, people from the DR. You’re not going to get that 1960s Spain Spanish: “hola, ¿cómo está usted?†No one says that ever. You’ll look just silly if you do say that.I remember seeing commercials on TV in Spanish for products. They were like: “Nuevo sabor. El refresco Coca-Cola.†This method is not going to teach you that type of Spanish. You won’t sound like a news broadcaster. It’s actually going to be authentic Spanish. But it’s not going to be street Spanish.They’re not going to teach you street Dominican Spanish like: “¿qué lo que e? DÃmelo.†Stuff like that, no. It’s not going to be hood Spanish, but it will be authentic Spanish that’s usable. They’ll teach you the difference between the formal and the informal tenses.All right, and I would say reason number five: this is extremely affordable. I paid $97 for the software version. And there is a lot that is included. I was able to use it to get through a lot of lessons. For 97 bucks, that’s like, what? Like 50% of some Jordan’s. So, just think about it. Just don’t buy Jordan’s and you can have this program. This is not a huge investment. For 97 bucks, we’re talking about a program that actually works.
There are more audio lessons in this audiobook than I had expected. Assuming I go through each lesson at least three or four times it will take me quite a while to complete everything. But so far, there isn't much to dislike. But it's still unclear to me if the downloadable guide that's included with the audio is identical to the Kindle ebook or if the ebook has additional lessons.
I have spent some years off and on trying to learn Spanish; audio books, books, video, etc. This audio book is the first audio book program that really speaks to me. The most simple and brilliant aspect of the approach involves building scenarios. Nothing complex, but the setup of "imagine a friend is helping you move and she says...". "And then you say....". The words end up in a context based on a setup of my own imagination. In addition, the logic of the chapters builds on previous chapters. I'm very pleased with this purchase.
I bought the Audible version w/ PDF and thoroughly enjoyed using it. I improved my vocabulary, grammar, and listening skills. They speak quickly, so occasionally I had to check the PDF. Now, I'm starting the Intermediate version. I sometimes wish the dialogues were more involved or revolved around a plot or practical event, but this is one of the more helpful language learning programs that I've tried so far.
